Notes

Depeche Mode's third out of four nights at the Hammersmith Odeon during their 1984-1985 Some Great Reward Tour. Two soundboard recordings and an FM broadcast master tape recording are available, detailed below.

Please note that there is contention regarding the true date of this audio. This FM broadcast as well as the 17.5-track soundboard recording are labelled as 1984-11-02, but depmod.com claims this audio as being from 1984-11-03 for an unknown reason.

  • The audio from all three sources (the BBC pre-FM vinyl and its "A Quick One" CD bootleg, the FM broadcast recording, and the 17.5-track soundboard recording) all match, so the only question is the date.
  • The cue sheet from the original BBC pre-FM promotional vinyl does not mention the date (see below for scans, thanks to Dennis Burmeister).
  • There is no FM broadcast recording that includes any radio announcer intro or outro; if you have a more complete recording of the original FM broadcast, please let me know!
  • I have asked Brat (webmaster of depechemode.com) but he does not have any contacts at the BBC to help track down the correct info and he said that unfortunately, the band's management would be of no help either.
  • PeterToo's tape of the 17.5 track soundboard is labelled 1984-11-02, as is the second-generation copy that I borrowed to transfer (see below).
  • twoshed's FM broadcast tape is labelled 1984-11-02. That date was retrieved from an old section on BBC's website, which is unfortunately not even available on archive.org. The BBC's site does not have a perfect track record for accuracy. Also, there is no announcer intro or outro on his FM broadcast tape, so it is unsure if the date was mentioned during the broadcast.
  • There are no audience recordings from either 1984-11-02 or 1984-11-03 to check the audio sources against; if you have an audience recording from these dates or even any of the four nights DM played at Hammersmith during this tour, please let me know!

So, the only question is where depmod.com came up with 1984-11-03 as the date. For the time being, I will label this audio as 1984-11-03 until proof can be furnished confirming the date. I don't want to change the accepted date of this recording without concrete evidence.

Portion Control was the support act.

Sources

  • Source 1 is sourced from a promotional BBC pre-FM vinyl containing 12 tracks. Sound is flawless.
  • Source 2 is sourced from an 17.5-track reference tape made for the band, with a very raw sounding mix. See You is only about 20 seconds long, and Shout and Just Can't Get Enough are entirely missing.
  • Source 3 is an FM broadcast master tape and contains Blasphemous Rumours not found on the pre-FM vinyl.
