Anecdote by depechemode-funny.de:

The audience participation, with their hands in the air from the first second on, was superb - Depeche's mood matched accordingly as the group was presented to all kinds of fun. Outside were about 70-100 crying, singing fans. Martin had an idea. An evil grin rose over his face. He swallowed hard and fast and began to laugh heartily. Curiosity arose as to what was the matter with Martin, but he gave no response and instead snatched himself a paper plate and a felt-tip pen. With a few lines he painted a smile on the lower part of the plate. The others joined in with Martin's laughter as soon as they detected Martin's intention. Andy placed himself on one side of the window that faced outside and Alan on the other. On cue, they drew up the curtains, and Martin, kneeling below the windowsill, held up his plate highly. The fans outside were being tricked into shouting and screaming. Martin rolled on the floor in laughter. Dave finally caught on to what was happening and contributed his own sweaty concert shirt on a coat hanger. Again, the curtains were raised, this time with a face on top of the shirt to resemble a torso, and again, wild calls ensued from the Depeche Mode choir. In the backstage area, however, everyone was nearly dying from laughter. Andy, with the tears rolling over his cheeks, shouted: "Phone: 567, Hotel International, After 20!", and the other Depechies did the same over the squeals of their female fans as they heard their (naturally false) telephone and room numbers through the open window.

Matt Fretton was the support act.
