Recordings labeled as "Hollywood 1985" or "1985-04-01 San Diego" sees to be a US FM radio broadcast of the "In Concert" (IC-85-17) LP mentioned above, with the same track listing. All circulating copies of this broadcast are quite mediocre sounding, and the radio station which broadcast it is unknown. It has most recently been mislabeled as 1985-04-01 San Diego on DIME.

This page attempts to detail most of the bootleg variants released containing a recording of, or at least some tracks from, Depeche Mode's concert at 1984-11-30 St. Jacobs Sporthalle, Basel, Switzerland. Promotional commercial releases (mostly the Westwood One pre-FM variants) are also detailed here. This list is not exhaustive. If you have any additional details for any of these items, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Westwood One "Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves - In Concert", IC-85-17 (1985)

"Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves - In Concert"[1] is a Westwood One pre-FM release from 1985 in a 2xLP format. There is a recording of the band Katrina And The Waves on most of the first LP; Depeche Mode begins on the second half of the B-side and follows on the next LP's entirety. This variant is the only Westwood One pre-FM release that contains "Leave In Silence" and "See You" not present on the later "In The Zone" releases mentioned above. This variant also has commercials between tracks. The track listing is:

  1. Something To Do
  2. Two Minute Warning
  3. People Are People
  4. Leave In Silence
  5. Blasphemous Rumours
  6. Master And Servant
  7. See You
  8. Shout
  9. Just Can't Get Enough

The concert intro, "Puppets", "If You Want", "New Life", "Shame", "Somebody", "Ice Machine", "Lie To Me", "Told You So", "Photographic", and "Everything Counts" are missing on this release. The content of this set is available on the "We Just Can't Get Enough" bootleg CD (1991) described below, although with the commercials removed. To date, a digital capture directly of this vinyl release does not circulate.

The content of this set is available on the following releases:

"We Just Can't Get Enough", Not On Label Label MTT 131 (1991)

"We Just Can't Get Enough"[2] contains the same nine tracks as the "Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves - In Concert" and is presumably a rip of that vinyl, with commercials edited out; as such, many tracks have incomplete beginnings. However, quality is quite good, as it's a pre-FM source.

"Hollywood 1985" or "1985-04-01 San Diego"

Recordings labeled as "Hollywood 1985" or "1985-04-01 San Diego" is an FM broadcast recording, seemingly originating from the US. All circulating copies of this broadcast are quite mediocre sounding, and the radio station which broadcast it is unknown. It has most recently been mislabeled as 1985-04-01 San Diego on DIME. The track listing is as follows:

  1. Intro
  2. Something To Do
  3. Two Minute Warning
  4. People Are People
  5. Leave In Silence
  6. Lie To Me
  7. New Life
  8. Shame
  9. Somebody
  10. Master And Servant
  11. Just Can't Get Enough

Depeche Mode / Aztec Camera - "Live", Sire / Warner Bros. Records WBMS 129 (1985)

"Depeche Mode / Aztec Camera - Live"[3] is a pre-FM LP containing five tracks:

  1. People Are People
  2. Blasphemous Rumours
  3. Master And Servant
  4. Everything Counts
  5. Just Can't Get Enough

The A-side label describes the tracks as having been recorded by Swiss Radio DRS-3. A digital capture of this vinyl release does not currently circulate.

"Performance" (The Swingin' Pig TSP-CD-090-2 [2xCD] and TSP 090-2 [2xLP]) (1991)

Front artwork

Luxembourg bootleg label "The Swingin' Pig"[4] released "Performance" on 2xCD[5] and 2xLP[6] in 1991. It is a full recording of the Swiss radio station DRS3's FM radio broadcast.

The "Performance" 2xCD bootleg is probably the most commonly available version of the Basel FM broadcast. However, it plays a bit slow, and the sound is somewhat muffled, likely due to the "NoNOISE" noise-reduction system (by "Sonic Solutions, USA") that was used by the bootleg label. The concert introduction is also missing entirely, and even the introductory noise to "Something To Do" is missing. I have not heard the LP variant, so I cannot comment on the sound or completeness of it.

Track listing:

  1. Something To Do
  2. Two Minute Warning
  3. Puppets
  4. If You Want
  5. People Are People
  6. Leave In Silence
  7. New Life
  8. Shame
  9. Somebody
  10. Ice Machine
  11. Lie To Me
  12. Blasphemous Rumours
  13. Told You So
  14. Master And Servant
  15. Photographic
  16. Everything Counts
  17. See You
  18. Shout
  19. Just Can't Get Enough

A speed-corrected version of the 2xCD variant is currently available as Source 2.

"I'll Never Get Enough", Buy Or Die Records BOD-CD 213 (1991)

"I'll Never Get Enough"[7] is an Italian single-CD bootleg variant. It is an incomplete DRS3 FM broadcast recording of average quality, with moderate distortion. "Something To Do" is missing about half the song, and the last three tracks of "See You", "Shout", and "Just Can't Get Enough" are missing entirely.

Track listing:

  1. Something To Do (incomplete)
  2. Two Minute Warning
  3. Puppets
  4. If You Want
  5. People Are People
  6. Leave In Silence
  7. New Life
  8. Shame
  9. Somebody
  10. Ice Machine
  11. Lie To Me
  12. Blasphemous Rumours
  13. Told You So
  14. Master And Servant
  15. Photographic
  16. Everything Counts
  17. See You

This audio, along with "Beautiful Boys" from the same label containing audio from 1983-10-08 London, was reissued as "Cloned Clowns" below.

"Cloned Clowns", Sound Carrier System - SCS 847015/16 (1994)[8]

The audio contained on this release is an exact clone of "I'll Never Get Enough", described above. This bootleg also uses the audio from another Buy Or Die Records release, "Beautiful Boys".

"Badlands", Turtle Records TR-205 / TR-206 (1992)

"Badlands"[9] is a 2xCD release. It is the only variant with the complete DRS3 FM broadcast, including the intro. Unfortunately, the sound quality is average at best, and a small portion of the start of "Just Can't Get Enough" is duplicated. The bootleg is quite alluring however, as it is housed in two gorgeous 4-panel digipaks.

Westwood One "In The Zone", SHOW# 97-19 (1997) and SHOW# 98-45 (1998)

"In The Zone"[10] is a 2xCD and 2xCD-R release by Westwood One, to whom DRS3 licensed their recording to. "In The Zone", being a pre-FM source, generally sounds quite good. Unfortunately, this particular release uses fake crowd noise throughout the recording, and commercials interspersed throughout the recording. The intros of several songs are poorly edited and incomplete in order to accommodate those commercials. It is unknown if the CD and CD-R variants share the same audio mix. Four tracks are not part of these releases: "Leave In Silence", "Shame", "Ice Machine", and "See You". The concert intro is present and complete, but the audience noise fades-in.

  1. Something To Do
  2. Two Minute Warning
