One week after Lanegan's departure, Ed Harcourt reached out to me regarding one of the musical ideas I'd shared. He reminisced about Mark's habit of affectionately calling his closest allies 'Brother'. Which is what he always called me too. This endearing term hinted at a camaraderie akin to a tight-knit family. The song became 'Brother'. Listening back for the first time, immersed in the music, emotions surged and memories flooded my mind. Initially overwhelmed, I was moved to tears by the sheer power of it all. Dave Gahan, being another of Mark's longtime friends, seemed the perfect fit for the vocals, and after hearing the track he completely agreed. Lyrics
Brother
I have died
A milion thousand times
In my dreams
And you lonely mind
I have thrown
My heart into the fire
Burnt as brightly
As the sun can blind
Brother, I've got your back
Don't worry, enjoy the ride
Little brother, there's no coming back
I'm always by your side
All the treasure that
you have given me
Buried deep beneath
my secret history
All of the welcome times
you have distracted me
I know your' sinking down
into the restless sea
Brother, I've got your back
Don't worry, enjoy the ride
Little brother, there's no coming back
I'm always by your side
Hang on
Hang on
You can climb out of this hole
You can pass a sad and sore
By the river's dark ripples
Where the branches hang sore
You can carry yourself home
To the brothers you have known
To the song that can't be broken
Little brother, I've got your back
Don't worry, enjoy the ride
Little brother, there's no coming back
I'm always by your side
Hang on
Hang on
Laughing when the joke is over
Singing when the music's dead
Talking to yourself until
The spirits raise their worried head
Heavy devils on your shoulders
Holding up you're falling down
Don't be moaned that you're not faultless
You don't need to work it out
To work it out
Little brother, there's no coming back
I'm always by your side

The opening line, 'I have died a million thousand times,' I thought, 'Wow, if anybody can sing that line with genuine conviction, it's Dave because of his history. He's such a genuine and gentle character. I don't know what he was like in the '80s and '90s, but he's somebody that is essentially a superstar. For somebody who can stand in front of a crowd and sing to that amount of people and then hold a very normal conversation afterwards, it's quite staggering, really. He holds onto his ego with the grip of a beast. He's a very, very nice guy.[2]
