Notes

Martin told the April 2003 issue of Rolling Stone France (translated from French):

"I discovered this song on a compilation less than a year ago. The original version is almost comical in its "cowboy sitting by the fire"-attitude, but I know very few songs that talk about loneliness as well as this one."

The daughter of this song's songwriter Lynn Rußwurm believes that he and co-writer Hank Thompson made more money through Martin Gore's rendition of their song than through any other song they ever wrote. [source]
