Notes

Radio 1 Roadshow was an annual summer event where BBC DJs would travel from town to town to play music (hosting artists/bands) and have competitions and interviews, etc. In 1982, it was broadcast in front of Caldicot Castle in Wales on May 3rd by Simon Bates.[1] Fan Paul Davies wrote: "I was there and I have a recording somewhere of the band being interviewed and Simon Bates asking about Alan leaving when he obviously meant Vince. I recall the band were late due to really bad Bank Holiday traffic on the M4. I'm sure they didn't actually perform, and were just there to be interviewed."[2]

Simon Bates: I think I can safely say that Depeche Mode have arrived. [...] Right, ladies and gentlemen, that's a rather familiar sound, and can I to introduce you to two guys from Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan and Andy Fletcher. Hello, lads. Hey, you've been surprised, haven't you?

Dave: Yeah.

Simon Bates: Thank you, first of all, for coming down. I know you know it, because you've come down for a good cause, it's because we're trying to collect some money for the vehicle over there. Let me ask you first of all - hang on a second, I can't even see you. Can you go down the front? it's ridiculous, because these guys are sitting behind me, as a result of which I can't even see who I'm talking to. Let's talk to Dave, first of all. Dave, you've got a tour coming up, haven't you?

Dave: Yeah, well, the American one.

Simon Bates: Oh, just the American one. How many cities do you play?

Dave: It's about 12 dates, I think.

Simon Bates: 12? Over how many days?

Dave: Two weeks.

Simon Bates: Blimey, you are going to be working, aren't you? How are you getting to the States?

Dave: On Friday we're flying out by Concord, I think.

Simon Bates: Oh, flash.

Dave: Yeah.

Simon Bates: Do you know where you're going?

Dave: We're still on the West Coast, we're doing New York and the general places. But the last time we were there we just played in New York.

Simon Bates: It's a rude question to ask, are you bigger in the States, or are you now just trying to develop yourselves?

Dave: No, we're not very big over there, but it's starting to happen over there now.

Simon Bates: Yeah, it must be very, very nerve-wracking, to go out in front of an audience that you know doesn't know you.

Dave: Yeah.

Simon Bates: It's like doing auditions, I guess, isn't it?

Andy: It's not as nerve-wracking as this, though.

Dave: No, it's not as nerve-wracking as this, I don't think I've ever seen this many people.

Simon Bates: Actually, that's Andy. Andy, let me ask you very quickly, why is there more nerve-wracking, you've been saying? All these people like you. [Aimed towards the crowd -ed] Don't you?

Crowd: [screams]

Simon Bates: You have no enemies here, I tell you something.

Andy: I was never trained for this.

Simon Bates: Yeah, well, we'll come back in just a second.

['Just Can't Get Enough' starts playing]

Simon Bates: Team, do you recognise this?

[...]

Simon Bates: [...] which is nice, in the sunshine, with a couple of guys from Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan, and also Andy Fletcher. Andy, there's a question I just want to ask you very quickly about a guy who was actually in your band, but he's left. That's Alan Wilder, isn't it?

Andy: Who has left? Vince has left.

Simon Bates: Vince, I mean. Sorry, what am I talking about? Vince has left, and he has formed his own group, hasn't he?

Andy: Yeah, Yazoo.

Simon Bates: Are you still friends?

Andy: Oh, yeah.

Simon Bates: Yeah, nothing nasty about that?

Andy: No, we stil see him a lot.

Simon Bates: That's good. In that case, let's go back to Dave. Dave...

Dave: Hello.

Simon Bates: Your new album.

Dave: Yeah, it should be coming out in September, and we're working on it when we come back. We've done a bit of it already, and we're working on the bulk of it when we come back from America.

Simon Bates: How long does it take to make an album? Because you're very precise in what you do, aren't you?

Dave: The last album took quite a long time. It took two, nearly three months, two months, was it? Two, nearly three months. So you can't really tell, you don't know how it's going to go until you can actually get into the studio.

Simon Bates: Do you write all the songs, then in and then do it, or do you just sit around in the studio, worrying?

Dave: No, we write the songs [recording stops -ed.]
