1984-05-xx Unknown, Austria
1984-05-xx Unknown, Austria is a call-in radio interview with Alan Wilder conducted by an unknown Austrian radio host. Wilder is not interviewed directly by the host, rather his answers were provided in advance and recited by the host in German in a question and answer format.
- Duration: 03:36 minutes
Host (translation): "Alan is the boss": that was written in a German teen magazine. So Alan Wilder is the most important one in Depeche Mode. In order to do that, Alan Wilder has replaced the now-also-well-known Vince Clarke in the synthpop band. Depeche Mode spend their time well: number 2 in England, number 1 in Germany, and in Austria? We will see. Subsequently, he is being confronted with another passion within music in this interview: Alan Wilder, the angel of peace, the fighter against war and violence.
Alan: The trouble is: If you took a vote across the country [about wars], you would find that the vast majority of people in this country are against all of that. It's just that the way our system works, it doesn't work like that.
Host (translation): Alan Wilder remembers the Falklands War: nothing can be done against that.
Alan: Well, what can you do? I mean, we write about problems in our songs, but we don't expect that our songs can really change anything. All we can hope to do is make people think a little bit. And if it makes a few people think about those problems, then that's the most we can expect to do, I think.
Host: Wie woll Depeche Mode schon gerne intensiven kontakt zum Publikum pflegen?
Host (translation): How do Depeche Mode wish to get intense contact with their audience?
Alan: Yes, sometimes people are interest in the words, and they talk to us. If we do a concert, maybe sometimes people come backstage and say, "I really like the words on your record", "Is it about this?", and "What do you think?", sometimes, yeah.
Host (translation): This pleasure [to speak to Depeche Mode backstage] is being withheld from us for the time being. Except if you drive to Heidelberg, so to Germany.
Alan: We're playing to do a big festival next month in June in Germany with Elton John. I think that's Heidelberg, in Germany. But we're only doing that one festival this summer. And then towards the end of the year, when we have a new album released, we'll be doing a proper tour in England and Europe.
Host (translation): There are as many people there [at the festival] as they get for their whole England tour, so it's a rather practical matter. Nevertheless: nothing special.
Alan: No, it's not really a special feeling. It's good for us, because it's such a good audience. I think there will be 50,000 people there in Germany. And that's the same amount of people that we may play on our whole English tour. So it's a big chance for us to play to a lot of people at one time.
Host: People are people [plays 'People Are People'].
