2005-09-07 Soundgarden, Radio Fritz, Berlin, Germany
Notes
Host Michael C. Lücke talked to his colleague Jakob Kranz, who had just returned from his interview with Depeche Mode at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin. From the sound of the interview, it seems that it was a group interview where not only all three members of the band were present but also several interviewers. Michael and Jakob filled their two-hour radio show with Depeche Mode songs, their history, and context preceding the interview, as well as translating the interview into German. The re-upload below has removed all that and only kept the actual interview segments.

Martin: Ich bin Martin Gore, Guten Tag.
Host Michael C. Lücke: Yes, that was today. Depeche Mode was in the city and Radio Fritz was there, represented by Jakob Kranz. First, we will ask the atmosphere in the studio about the recording of Playing The Angel.
Martin: Yes, the atmosphere in the studio was really good. I think we all got on very well as a band. And I think the producer was a great choice. And I think that his team that he brought in, the two programmers, Dave McCracken and Rick Morris, all helped to make a great atmosphere in the studio. And we just had fun making this record.
Andy: It was wunderbar.
Michael C. Lücke: Martin L Gore was, of course, as we know, speaking in this interview. And he has a few other things to say about what the new record, the new CD, Playing The Angel, is about.
Martin: It's a lot more energetic. It's a lot faster, maybe, than our last two records. The last two records I particularly like, but maybe some people may call them somber. But this record is far more [starts singing a song by Odyssey, with Dave joining:] "back to our roots... Yeah... Zippin' up my boots."
Dave: Yeah, something like that.
Martin [still singing]: "Going back to my roots, yeah."
Michael C. Lücke: Good, let's go to the complex writer, Dave Gahan.
Andy: There's a big difference on the album. Dave's written some great songs on that-
Dave: -fewer-
Andy: -No, I'm serious.
Dave: Some of the best, actually.
Andy: And that has, I think, made the mood of the group good as well.
Michael C. Lücke: Let's hear how the band looks at things that go wrong.
Martin: There's lots of things that went wrong in my life. [sings a funeral anthem]
[Everybody laughs]
Dave: There's lots of good things as well! You always focus on the bad. Look at this, look. It's the tiniest violin in the world.
[Everybody laughs]
Martin: No, but at the moment I'm going through divorce.
Dave: That sucks, actually. There's no two ways about it.
Martin: Which sucks, you know. And I've got three children.
Dave: That sucks more.
Martin: That sucks more.
