"Slow" is a song from the 2013 album Delta Machine by Depeche Mode.
Notes
'Slow' is the first Martin Gore-penned song known to have been written and shelved before eventually seeing use on an album years after the time of its writing.
Daryl Bamonte told HOME in 2006:
"[...] Then when Martin recorded his demo's for [Songs Of Faith And Devotion] there was a really good song called 'Slow', which was excellent, had a sort of 'Dressed In Black' feel to it, I don't think the band even recorded that track."[1]
Steffen Rüth asked Dave Gahan about this song in 2013, and he replied:
"I think it was a song from even earlier than that maybe. Maybe it was a song that was written for Songs Of Faith And Devotion. I don't really remember. It might be Songs Of Faith And Devotion it was written for. But at the time... as soon as I heard it, I said to Martin: "That's an old song." And he said: "Yeah, I needed to reinterpret it." He'd kind of reworked it. When Martin was demoing before, I seem to remember sitting in a meeting when we listened to the demos, and Alan [Wilder] kind of not getting it, just kind of... well, out of songs that we were going to record it just wasn't chosen at that particular time. So I guess Martin put it away, and it fits really well with everything we're doing now. Because of its blues influence, and I think Martin pulled from that school a lot more on this record."
Rüth also interviewed Martin Gore, and asked about this song:
Rüth: It is the case in a song like 'Slow' [that a positive sounding song is put together with blues]. Stylistically it is a blues song, but lyrically it's about...
Gore: ... sex. [laughs] Let's call it like it is. 'Slow' is a sensitive, erotic song about the joy of sex. Sometimes, things are very simple.
Andrew Fletcher told Exclaim! (archived):
"That, believe it or not, was a song that was written for Songs Of Faith And Devotion and for some bizarre reason never got recorded. Martin was going through his demos and came across it and said "Actually, this is quite good" so he did a new demo and it's a great song."
Lyrics
Slow
Slow, slow
As slow as you can go
So I can feel all I want to know
Slow, slow
I'll go with your flow
Let the world keep its carnival pace
I prefer to look into your beautiful face
What a waste
Let the stars continue to fly by
I don't have one desire to understand why
I don't try
Slow, slow
As slow as you can go
I want my senses to overflow
Slow, slow
And doesn't it show
I don't need a race in my bed
When speed's in my heart
And speed's in my head
Instead
It's tempting for fools to rush in
When something's so good
Why should we rush a thing
It's a sin
Slow, slow
As slow as you can go
That's how I like it
I like it
I don't need a race in my bed
When speed's in my heart
And speed's in my head
Instead
Slow, slow
As slow as you can go
That's how I like it
I like it
