1982-10-25 Hammersmith Odeon, London, England, UK
Notes
This was the second of two nights performed at this venue during this tour. The prior night had an identical set list.
Matt Fretton was the support act.
Planned video release
This concert was filmed for Mute Records. The Depeche Mode Information Service made mention to subscribers in December 1982 that the concert was filmed and had hoped to be able to offer this recording to its subscribers on video cassette, but neither distribution via the Information Service nor a proper official release by Mute Records of the video footage occurred. By June 1983, plans for a release of this video footage had unfortunately been shelved in favor of newer material. Depeche Mode's first official live concert video release ended up being The World We Live In and Live In Hamburg.
The December 1982 newsletter mentioned:
As many of you may have noticed, at the second Hammersmith Odeon concert in October a video film crew were recording the show for Mute Records. At the moment it isn't certain exactly how and to what extent the video will be used but Depeche Mode Information do hope to be able to offer a video cassette sometime next year at as low a price as is possible. Meanwhile if anyone thinks they may be interested in purchasing one please let us know so we know how many to order.
The February 1983 newsletter mentioned:
The compilation video recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in October last year should be on general release pretty soon. Although we don't yet have a definitive release date it will cost in the region of £25 and will be available through DEPECHE MODE Information.
The March 1983 newsletter mentioned:
The live/compilation video still isn't ready for release but we hope to have set a date by the 4/83 Information Sheet.
The April/May 1983 newsletter mentioned:
We apologise for still not having any definitive release date for the live/compilation video but the band hope to view all the clips of film prior to the final editing this month.
Finally, the June 1983 newsletter stated:
Unfortunately it appears that the promised compilation and live video filmed during last year's British Tour will have to be scrapped. Due to the band's very heavy recording schedule the work needed to finish off the cassette has had to be shelved at least until August by which time the film will be almost a year old and DEPECHE MODE feel they would rather release new material then. Any further news we receive will be printed.
Television broadcasts
The video was later broadcast on the Danish television station DR TV with burned-in Danish subtitles. Archived TV schedules suggest that this broadcast occurred on 1984-09-29 at 3pm. According to the same source, the show was produced by Daniel Miller, with Danish subtitles courtesy of Henrik Gottlieb.
Until 2020, this broadcast was the source of most, if not all, copies in circulation. A DVD of a pre-broadcast Digital Betacam (DigiBeta) copy surfaced in early 2020 by DMLiveWiki and is available to stream and download below as Source 1.
All available video copies are missing Monument, Shout, Photographic, and Dreaming Of Me.
Audio releases
The majority of this concert, including Shout and Photographic, which were not included on the video, was released through various editions of the "Get The Balance Right," "Everything Counts," and "Love In Itself" single releases. They were also included in the 'X2' box set, the 'A Broken Frame' album reissue, the iTunes compilation 'The Complete Depeche Mode,' and the 12" Singles Box Set series.
These songs are presented in stereo, unlike the audio soundtrack presented on the video recording, which is in mono.
Audio recordings of Leave In Silence, Shouldn't Have Done That, Monument, The Sun & The Rainfall, and Dreaming Of Me have not been officially released. However, Leave In Silence, Shouldn't Have Done That, and The Sun & The Rainfall were included on the video footage.
Only Monument and Dreaming Of Me are ultimately not available in either video or audio form. It is unclear whether any further footage or audio recordings still exist from this concert.
