"Heroes" is a cover of the Davie Bowie song of the same name. This song has significance to the beginning of Depeche Mode; Composition of Sound (comprising Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Vince Clarke) heard Dave singing the song at a rehearsal (1980-04-0x Rehearsal, Woodlands School, Basildon, Essex, England, UK) and were impressed with Dave's performance. The band are covering it live for the Global Spirit Tour; the first instance was a live performance at New York's Highline Stages, on August 3rd, 2016. That performance was recorded and filmed, but is yet to be released.

Dave Gahan told Classic Pop magazine in March 2017: "When we started rehearsing I brought up the idea of maybe doing a Bowie cover especially after losing him. Martin and I are both huge fans, and still are. So it just seemed right, Martin was into it. It's got a real early Depeche flavour to it."
