Notes

On the night of November 3rd to 4th, the band was still staying in a hotel in Denver and Martin Gore was arrested that night. He explained in Pavement magazine, issued April 16th 1997:

"The night before I got arrested, I had a party in my room and there were about 50 people and it was really loud. The night of the arrest, it was me and a friend and the music was really quiet. They rang me and asked me to turn it down, so I did. They rang me again and asked me to turn it down, so I turned it off. Next thing I know there's complete silence and the police knocked on the door. I stupidly opened it. They burst in, threw me on the bed and handcuffed me. There was no music whatsoever playing. I think they were out to get me for the night before. I can't remember much about it. I was really drunk at the time and it seemed like fun. The next day, when I sobered up, I realised why some of the people in there weren't too happy with me. I'd just been done for disturbing the peace. If you've got this really jovial person in the cell next to you, singing and being really happy, and you're about to go down for 25 years, it's not that amusing. I had a good time but I only had the one night, not 25 years."

Here is Daryl Bamonte's entry for the famous Devotional Tour Diary, published in Bong magazine in 1994:

November 1st, CHICAGO: The band is shooting a video on location, starting promptly this morning. Or in the immortal words of JD Fanger, "You will be taken into the woods at 11:00am and shot immediately!"[1]

November 2nd, DENVER: Poor old Martin L. Gore. I've just seen him dragged out of his room dressed in nothing but a pair of silk boxer shorts and a pair of huge handcuffs. Two huge female police officers burst into his room and arrested him for "making too much noise". The funny thing was, we had turned his stereo off, after a few complaints. The source of offending volume? Martin's infamous loud voice. "Can I just say one more thing!?!..."

The The was the support act.

  1. DM travelled from Minnesota to Colorado on November 1st, so the recording date of the videoshoot to 'One Caress' was probably on October 27th, when they had a day off in Chicago.
