1984-11-30 St. Jacobs Sporthalle, Basel, Switzerland/Bootleg and commercial variants
This page attempts to detail bootleg variants that include either a full recording or select tracks from Depeche Mode's concert at 1984-11-30 St. Jacobs Sporthalle, Basel, Switzerland. It also provides information on promotional commercial releases, primarily several pre-FM variants released by Westwood One, whom DRS3 licensed their recording to.
Please note that this list is not exhaustive; if you have additional information about any of these items, feel free to contact me.
To date, no audience recording of the Basel concert has surfaced. All available sources come from professionally recorded audio produced by Swiss radio station DRS3 in 1984. Additionally, the intro ambiance for "Somebody" is missing from all DRS3 variants. This is likely because the tape was changed between "Shame" and "Somebody".
"Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves - In Concert", Westwood One - IC-85-17 (1985)
"Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves - In Concert"[1] is a pre-FM recording released in 1985 as a 2×LP set.
The first LP predominantly features a recording of Katrina And The Waves, while Depeche Mode’s performance begins on the latter half of the B-side and continues throughout the entire second LP.
Notably, this variant is the only Westwood One pre-FM release that includes the tracks "Leave In Silence" and "See You," which are absent from later "In The Zone" releases. Additionally, this version includes commercials inserted between tracks.
The track listing for Depeche Mode's set is as follows:
- Something To Do
- Two Minute Warning
- People Are People
- Leave In Silence
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Master And Servant
- See You
- Shout
- Just Can't Get Enough
Please note that the following songs are missing from this release: the concert intro, "Puppets," "If You Want," "New Life," "Shame," "Somebody," "Ice Machine," "Lie To Me," "Told You So," "Photographic," and "Everything Counts".
The content from this set is available on the "We Just Can't Get Enough" bootleg CD described below, albeit with the commercials removed. To date, no direct digital capture of this vinyl release has circulated.
"We Just Can't Get Enough", Not On Label - MTT 131 (1991)
The "We Just Can't Get Enough" bootleg CD[2] contains the same nine tracks as the "Depeche Mode / Katrina And The Waves – In Concert" release.
This CD is sourced from a transfer of the aforementioned vinyl release, albeit with the commercials edited out, which results in some tracks having incomplete beginnings. However, the overall quality is quite good, as it originates from a pre-FM source.
"Depeche Mode / Aztec Camera – Live From Switzerland / Live From Scotland", Sire / Warner Bros. Records - WBMS 129 (1985)
Depeche Mode / Aztec Camera – Live From Switzerland / Live From Scotland[3] is a pre-FM vinyl release containing five Depeche Mode tracks, along with a recording of the band Aztec Camera. The track list for the A-side is as follows:
- People Are People
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Master And Servant
- Everything Counts
- Just Can't Get Enough
The A-side label states that the tracks were recorded by "Swiss Radio DRS-3." Currently, no digital capture of this release is in circulation.
"In The Zone", Westwood One SHOW# 97-19 (1997) and SHOW# 98-45 (1998)
"In The Zone"[4] is a 2×CD and 2×CD-R release by Westwood One. As a pre-FM source, the audio generally sounds quite good. Unfortunately, this release features fake crowd noise throughout and includes commercials interspersed within the recording. Consequently, the intros of several songs are poorly edited and incomplete.
The track listing is as follows:
- Intro
- Something To Do
- Two Minute Warning
- Puppets
- If You Want
- People Are People
- New Life
- Somebody
- Lie To Me
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Told You So
- Master And Servant
- Photographic
- Everything Counts
- Shout
- Just Can't Get Enough
It is unknown whether the CD and CD-R variants share the same audio mix. Additionally, four tracks are missing from these releases: "Leave In Silence," "Shame," "Ice Machine," and "See You." Although the concert intro is present and complete, the audience noise fades-in.
"Just Can't Get Enough" (Trap Records 3011) (1985)
West German bootleg label "Trap Records" released "Just Can't Get Enough"[5], probably in 1985. Taken from the DRS3 radio broadcast, this source is of average quality and moderate distortion, and is missing the full intro and most of "Something To Do".
Track listing:
- Something To Do (incomplete)
- Two Minute Warning
- Puppets
- If You Want
- People Are People
- Leave In Silence
- New Life
- Shame
- Somebody
- Ice Machine
- Lie To Me
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Told You So
- Master And Servant
- Photographic
- Everything Counts
- See You
- Shout
- Just Can't Get Enough
A partial transfer of this source was made available on the "I'll Never Get Enough" bootleg CD listed below.
"I'll Never Get Enough", Buy Or Die Records BOD-CD 213 (1991)
"I'll Never Get Enough"[6] is an Italian single-CD bootleg variant containing a partial transfer of "We Just Can't Get Enough" described immediately above, but omits the last two tracks ("Shout" and "Just Can't Get Enough").
Track listing:
- Something To Do (incomplete)
- Two Minute Warning
- Puppets
- If You Want
- People Are People
- Leave In Silence
- New Life
- Shame
- Somebody
- Ice Machine
- Lie To Me
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Told You So
- Master And Servant
- Photographic
- Everything Counts
- See You
This audio, along with "Beautiful Boys" from the same label containing audio from 1983-10-08 London, was reissued as "Cloned Clowns" below.
"Cloned Clowns", Sound Carrier System - SCS 847015/16 (1994)[7]
The audio contained on this 2xCD release is an exact clone of "I'll Never Get Enough", described above. This bootleg also uses the audio from another Buy Or Die Records release, "Beautiful Boys".
"Performance" (The Swingin' Pig TSP-CD-090-2 [2xCD] and TSP 090-2 [2xLP]) (1991)
Luxembourg bootleg label "The Swingin' Pig"[8] released "Performance" on 2xCD[9] and 2xLP[10] in 1991. It is an almost complete recording of the Swiss radio station DRS3's FM radio broadcast.
The "Performance" 2xCD bootleg is probably the most commonly available version of the Basel FM broadcast. Collecting fans should prefer this 2xCD release as it is quite common and generally inexpensive, and more complete overall compared to all other variants. However, it plays a bit slow, and the sound is somewhat muffled, likely due to the "NoNOISE" noise-reduction system (by "Sonic Solutions, USA") that was used by the bootleg label. The concert introduction is also missing entirely, and even the introductory noise to "Something To Do" is missing.
Track listing:
- Something To Do
- Two Minute Warning
- Puppets
- If You Want
- People Are People
- Leave In Silence
- New Life
- Shame
- Somebody
- Ice Machine
- Lie To Me
- Blasphemous Rumours
- Told You So
- Master And Servant
- Photographic
- Everything Counts
- See You
- Shout
- Just Can't Get Enough
A speed-corrected version of the 2xCD variant is currently available as Source 3.
"Badlands", Turtle Records TR-205 / TR-206 (1992)
"Badlands"[11] is a 2xCD release bootleg sourced from the DRS3 FM broadcast and it is the only variant with the complete concert intro. Unfortunately, the sound quality is average at best, with various cuts throughout the recording. "Just Can't Get Enough" cuts out on the main source, and a second unknown source with an almost complete "Just Can't Get Enough" is included after the first partial take. The bootleg is quite alluring physically however, as it is housed in two gorgeous 4-panel digipaks.
