1982-02-10 BBC Paris Studio, London, England, UK/Source 1
Notes
An excellent soundboard-quality recording created from two digital rebroadcast sources. This is the fourth concert with Alan Wilder in the live line-up and the earliest recording currently available of the 1982 See You Tour.
All songs, except for Now, This Is Fun, originate from a February 2024 BBC Sounds segment titled "Depeche Mode Live". The original M4A 320kbps file was captured and utilized for this rework, offering an improved frequency response, up to 21KHz. Meanwhile, Now, This Is Fun is sourced from a May 1, 2010, BBC6 digital satellite broadcast, initially recorded in the original MP2 160kbps format (accessible at Source 2). It maintains a decent frequency response, extending up to 15KHz. To preserve the integrity of the audio, it has been exported to FLAC, ensuring no re-encoding was performed.
There are some flaws present, such as occasional slight bass distortion reminiscent of tape saturation, and sporadic small glitches (e.g., timestamp 1:10 during I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead). These minor imperfections were evident in prior versions and are more conspicuous in modern digital broadcasts, which closely resemble the original source compared to FM radio broadcasts recorded on cassette tape. This aligns with a similar disclaimer found on certain CD reissues of Depeche Mode albums:
The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment. We have attempted to preserve, as closely as possible, the sound of the original recording. Because of its high resolution, however, the Compact Disc can reveal limitations of the source tape.
The previously best-available source for this audio was a direct digital satellite broadcast capture of a BBC6 Live Music Hour segment aired on May 1, 2010, still accessible at Source 2.
Additionally, an excellent recording of an analog FM broadcast, sourced directly from a master cassette, is still available as Source 3.
