According to a concertgoer, Martin Gore gave the middle finger to an audience member during "The Things You Said".

Andy Franks, tour manager: "I came back to the Depeche tour after my brain hemorrhage, of course now I wasn't working. We were doing a show in Cardiff, and the band had just started doing the encore. By now they've moved to this big 24 track tape recorder, with great big spools and everything. I was stood by the monitor desk, and the tape recorder was on my blind side. I just leaned against the spool and unbeknownst to me, the tape had stopped. The band were fucking playing and boom! It just went down, and they all stopped. They're like, "What the fuck? What's going on?" and then they walked off stage. Everyone thought that was the end of the show, and no one knew what had happened. And then someone came up to me and said, "I think you leaned on the tape recorder." Uh-oh, better not do that again! Whenever I was going anywhere near the monitor desk, they're like "Whoa, keep him away! Don't let him near the fucking tape recorder, Jesus Christ!"
