In 2011, former Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder announced the Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection, an historic equipment, vinyl, and memorabilia auction organized in partnership with Omega Auctions. Held at the Manchester Zion Arts Centre, the auction put hundreds of Depeche Mode and Recoil memorabilia under the hammer, serving bidders both in-person and online. Among the hundreds of items sold were several pieces of equipment pre-loaded with sound banks or accompanied by physical media containing sound banks, as well as twenty signed and numbered zip discs each containing dozens of banks programmed by Wilder for use with the EMU Emax and Emax II sampler keyboards during the 1987-1988 Music For The Masses Tour, 1990 World Violation Tour, 1993 Devotional Tour, and 1994 Exotic Tour..

Among the hundreds of items sold at the 2011 were a variety of musical equipment and zip discs pre-loaded with live sound banks originally programmed by former Depeche Mode member and Recoil founder Alan Wilder for use with the http://www.vintagesynth.com/emu/emax.php E-MU Emax and http://www.vintagesynth.com/emu/emax.php Emax II sampler keyboards during the Music For The Masses, World Violation and Devotional/Exotic tours.

[[File:Zip_big.jpg|252px|thumb|right|The Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection: 20 x AW / DM sound sample ZIP discs]]

The sound banks stored within the twenty zip discs sold at the auction contain an array of audio samples allocated across the keyboard for live performances. In nearly all cases, the samples were sourced from the original multitrack recordings. Among these sound banks are sounds for song renditions that were only ever performed live, as well as songs which never made the final tour set list.
The programs stored within the twenty ZIP discs sold at auction include an array (or "sound bank") of audio samples per song sourced from their respective multitrack recordings, as well as the necessary programming which dictates how and from which physical keys each sample can be played back once loaded from the appropriate Emax I or II sampler keyboards. Included on the discs are sound banks for songs versions that were only ever performed live (such as the Exotic Tour version of 'I Want You Now') as well as songs which never made the final tour set list.

<b>Copied from the original auction listing:</b>
The sound banks included on the ZIP discs were not the only banks made available at the time of the auction. Certain pieces of equipment, such as Alan Wilder's Emulator II were listed as including several Depeche Mode and Recoil sound banks as well as an additional collection of various sample library-sourced sounds. <b>If you possess these unlisted Depeche Mode or Recoil sound banks, please reach out to [mailto:[email protected] [email protected].]</b>

The Zip discs will work in any suitable Zip drive and connect to the Emax via a scuzi cable. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to transfer everything absolutely perfectly from the original floppies. The vast majority of sounds are fully in tact[<i>sic</i>] but one or two have small corruptions at the end of notes. The good news is that, with a bit of careful editing, these glitches can be removed. I spent many hours (days!) programming each member’s keyboards for the tours, painstakingly trying to recreate as accurately as possible the sounds we formulated and used on the records. The Emax was a perfect tool for the live re-creations. This collection covers most of my own sounds for the two tours, although I did play live drums on some songs. I tried all these out recently and discovered how much fun it is to work out the various parts we all used to play. I even found some guide sounds which weren’t actually performed live but were used to demonstrate parts to others. For example, I discovered some guide vocals for 'Condemnation' which were sampled to help routine our girl backing vocalists during the rehearsals.

Sound banks overview
Overview
Due to the unlisted nature of some sound banks that were sold separately from the documented zip discs, these tables list them as described on the auction page, with additional information on several sound banks that are not documented there. Several banks include duplicate presets for an unknown reason. This may be a translation error during the process of creating first generation copies from Alan's original zip discs and writing them to the twenty numbered zip drives prior to the auction, a translation error during the process of translating the banks from their original formats, or simple human error on Alan Wilder's part when originally building the sound banks.
Please note that due to the unlisted nature of some sound banks which were sold separately from the documented zip discs, these tables list them as described on their respective auction pages, with additional information on several sound banks which are not documented there.

Equipment presets/patches
Several pieces of equipment sold at the Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection came pre-loaded with original presets or patches that were employed by Wilder during recording sessions for various Depeche Mode and Recoil releases.
Zoom 9010 FX Processor
[[File:Zoom.jpg|252px|thumb|right|Zoom 9010 FX processor]]
Separate from the sampler keyboards and zip discs sold at the Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection was the Zoom 9010 multi-effect processor. This rack-mount unit was used during the recording of Songs Of Faith And Devotion, as well as several Recoil albums. This unit was sold with several patches stored on memory card, including presets and settings for the guitar effects of I Feel You and drum loops on Mercy In You, among others.
<b>If you possess the Zoom 9010 unit from Alan's auction, please reach out to [mailto:[email protected] [email protected]].</b>
Alan's Comments
<blockquote>
This superb little unit has a unique sound of it’s[sic] own and has been a ‘go-to’ effect for many years, both with Depeche Mode and Recoil. This particular box still has stored many of the guitar effects used on ‘SOFAD’ including the I Feel You guitar settings amongst many others. It is also very versatile and adaptable – often we would use it on a voice for example to create a dirty, radio-frequency effect, or perhaps on drum loops like on Mercy In You.

* Many sound banks built by Alan Wilder for use on the 1993 Devotional Tour and 1994 Exotic Tours, though since converted to modern sampler formats, remain in use by Depeche Mode today, with few apparent changes.
* The live renditions of 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth' and 'It Doesn't Matter' as played on the Music For The Masses Tour are the only known Depeche Mode songs to have used sequences played back live directly from the EMU Emax sampler keyboard.
* Wilder's sound banks for the 1993 Devotional Tour and 1994 Exotic Tours spanned two discs labeled 'Alan Disc 1 Emax II 93' and 'Alan Disc 2 Emax II 93'. The EMU Emax and EMU Emax II sound banks that were stored on the twenty zip discs which commonly circulate online are from the second of the two discs. According to an anonymous source, the contents of the first disc were never included in the auction, as Wilder could not recall what happened to it at the time during the preparation stage of the auction. This missing disc presumably includes Wilder's sound banks for Higher Love, Policy Of Truth, World In My Eyes, Walking In My Shoes, Behind The Wheel, Halo, Judas, Stripped, Enjoy The Silence, Get Right With Me, One Caress, Strangelove, and the percussion samples for Personal Jesus, which were triggered via Pearl drum-pads using Akai ME35T audio/MIDI units on these tours.
* Second generation copies of the sound bank containing Wilder's musical parts for 'Fly On The Windscreen' and a secondary bank for 'Walking In My Shoes' were initially incapable of conversion to other sampler formats using EMXP, a popular software tool for converting disks and files for EMU sampler products. This was due to a software bug which produced a "corrupt voice error 24" message when encountering negative settings for the "Velocity-to-Resonance" parameter within the sound bank's 'WALK PIANO' preset. Notably, "Velocity" is the only Emax sampler parameter that can have a negative value. This bug was fixed as of EMXP v3.00.3.

* Wilder's Devotional and Exotic tour sound banks have an average Emax filter value of 117, an average resonance value of 22, and an average chorus value of 13 across two hundred and forty-four samples. Of these samples, 77 are looped samples and 87 are one shots (the difference in totals between these two figures is a result of some samples being used multiple times in the same preset).

Live sound banks is a featured article
An Emax II Turbo 16 bit sampler keyboard, one of the pieces of equipment sold at the 2011 Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection

Among the hundreds of items sold at the 2011 Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection were a variety of musical equipment and zip discs pre-loaded with live sound banks originally programmed by former Depeche Mode member and Recoil founder Alan Wilder for use with the E-MU Emax and Emax II sampler keyboards during the Music For The Masses, World Violation and Devotional/Exotic tours.[1][2]

20x "AW/DM sound sample" ZIP discs

The programs stored within the twenty ZIP discs sold at auction include an array (or "sound bank") of audio samples per song sourced from their respective multitrack recordings, as well as the necessary programming which dictates how and from which physical keys each sample can be played back once loaded from the appropriate Emax I or II sampler keyboards.[2] Included on the discs are sound banks for songs versions that were only ever performed live (such as the Exotic Tour version of 'I Want You Now') as well as songs which never made the final tour set list.

If you possess these unlisted Depeche Mode or Recoil sound banks, please reach out to [email protected].

Alan Wilder's comments

I spent many hours (days!) programming each member’s keyboards for the tours, painstakingly trying to recreate as accurately as possible the sounds we formulated and used on the records. The Emax was a perfect tool for the live re-creations. This collection covers most of my own sounds for the two tours, although I did play live drums on some songs. I tried all these out recently and discovered how much fun it is to work out the various parts we all used to play. I even found some guide sounds which weren’t actually performed live but were used to demonstrate parts to others. For example, I discovered some guide vocals for 'Condemnation' which were sampled to help routine our girl backing vocalists during the rehearsals.[3][4]

The Zip discs will work in any suitable Zip drive and connect to the Emax via a scuzi cable.[5] Despite our best efforts, we were unable to transfer everything absolutely perfectly from the original floppies. The vast majority of sounds are fully [intact] but one or two have small corruptions at the end of notes. The good news is that, with a bit of careful editing, these glitches can be removed. (Thanks goes to Tom & Simon for their help).[6][3]

Overview

Please note that due to the unlisted nature of some sound banks which were sold separately from the documented zip discs, these tables list them as described on their respective auction pages, with additional information on several sound banks which are not documented there.

Trivia

Alan Wilder performing with the Emax II Turbo
  • The live renditions of 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth' and 'It Doesn't Matter' as played on the Music For The Masses Tour are the only known Depeche Mode songs to have used sequences played back live directly from the EMU Emax sampler keyboard.
  • Second generation copies of the sound bank containing Wilder's musical parts for 'Fly On The Windscreen' and a secondary bank for 'Walking In My Shoes' were initially incapable of conversion to other sampler formats using EMXP, a popular software tool for converting disks and files for EMU sampler products. This bug was fixed as of EMXP v3.00.3.[17]
  • Wilder's Devotional and Exotic tour sound banks have an average Emax filter value of 117, an average resonance value of 22, and an average chorus value of 13 across two hundred and forty-four samples. Of these samples, 77 are looped samples and 87 are one shots (the difference in totals between these two figures is a result of some samples being used multiple times in the same preset).
    • Wilder played live keyboard and live drums on approximately 64% and 17% respectively of the songs played on the Devotional tour. On the Exotic tour, he played live keyboard and live drums approximately 53% and 35% respectively.
    • Martin Gore played live keyboard, live guitar, and sang lead vocals on approximately 42%, 28%, and 28% respectively of all songs played on the Devotional and Exotic tours.
    • Andrew Fletcher (and later Daryl Bamonte starting from the April 4th, 1994 São Paulo show onwards) played live keyboard on approximately 60% of the songs played on the Devotional and Exotic tours.

  7. 'Strangelove' was also rehearsed for the 1993 Devotional Tour, but ultimately was never performed.
  8. Strangely, 'Black Celebration's sound bank is not listed on the auction page, despite a sound bank existing for the song on the zip drives sold at auction.
  9. Strangely, 'Master And Servant's sound bank is not listed on the auction page, despite a sound bank existing for the song on the zip drives sold at auction.
  10. This sound bank includes one-shot percussion hits for multiple songs, including People Are People, Master And Servant, and Stripped. The sound bank was available to all three keyboardists loaded via Emax samplers and was triggered via onstage drum-pads.
  11. Though not explicitly mentioned on the auction page, some tracks were also played during the Exotic tour, with live renditions of 'Waiting For The Night' and 'I Want You Now' played exclusively during that tour.
  12. This sound bank includes a second preset labeled 'WALK PIANO'. It is unclear why this preset for Walking In My Shoes was saved to Alan Wilder's primary bank for 'Fly On The Windscreen'. This bank was played by Wilder in addition to his primary 'Walking In My Shoes' sound bank and was switched using MIDI triggered via footswitch. Wilder's primary 'Walking In My Shoes' bank was never included in the auction due to Wilder having been unable to locate the first of two discs containing his 1993 Devotional Tour sound banks.
  13. 'Nothing' was rehearsed, but was never performed during the 1993 Devotional Tour or 1994 Exotic Tour.
  14. 'Something To Do' was performed only once during the 1993 Devotional Tour, on 1993-05-25 Forest National Stadium, Brussels, Belgium; it replaced 'Fly On The Windscreen' in the typical concert set list.
  15. Leave In Silence was rehearsed, but was never performed during the 1993 Devotional Tour or 1994 Exotic Tour.
  16. 'Waiting For The Night' was played at several concerts at the start of the 1994 Exotic Tour.
