"Strangelove" is a song from the 1987 album Music For The Masses by Depeche Mode. It was first released as a lead single on 13 April 1987.

Notes

Dave Gahan told Gear Magazine in 1998:

"You're a teenager, and this is quite possibly the best time of your life, so get ready, it's all downhill from there. 'I've got to get to you first before they do.' I guess Martin thought he could influence people with honesty. It's like warning people, throwing out a big red light."

Martin Gore said in Bong issue no. 37, 1998:

"This was perceived as being sadomasochistic, but I think it's just honest. It asks a question - are you prepared to go the distance with this relationship or whatever it is your having? Because it's going to be painful."

Dave Bascombe told Super Deluxe Edition in July 2019:

"That was actually one song where I know Martin, quite early on, was unhappy with the way it was going and we ended up... I think on his original demo, it had a fast bass line and then Alan had made it half time and I remember Martin not being happy with that. And again, my contribution as a co-producer was just to say "Well, why don't you have both?" [laughs] and if you listen to the single version there are two bass lines going on there. Martin's [original] was much faster and more urgent and then for the album version it became even more slow and lazy."

When Depeche Mode was interviewed about the songs on the '101' CD for the April 1989 issue of French magazine 'Best', Alan Wilder said (translated from French):

"The only thing that comes to mind about 'Strangelove' is the amount of time we spent on recording it and the discussions it caused. I can't even say how many times we had to redo it. We had to change the bass line at least a hundred times. We also had a lot of percussion that we ended up removing. In fact, the problem was that we decided it would become a single before even recording it and that complicated things. We wanted to do it well, and all that for a result which, in my opinion, is not excellent. The live version is much more satisfying."

Alan Wilder also wrote in his 86-98 editorial in 1998:

"'Strangelove' was the exact opposite to a song like "Stripped". Difficult to piece together, consisting as it did of many little parts, it was hard to find one thing to pin the track down. The single was released before the final mixing of Music For The Masses and it was during this late stage that Daniel visited the studio to assist with it - an act that demonstrated the still close production relationship he had with the band. He contributed a 12" version (Blind mix) and by the time the band was ready to mix 'Strangelove' for the LP, it was decided that the album version should incorporate elements of this. Thus, the result was an amalgamation of the original and Dan's remix."

Lyrics

Strangelove

There'll be times

When my crimes

Will seem almost unforgivable

I give in to sin

Because you have to make this life livable

But when you think I've had enough

From your sea of love

I'll take more than another riverful

Yes, and I'll make it all worthwhile

I'll make your heart smile

Strangelove

Strange highs and strange lows

Strangelove

That's how my love goes

Strangelove

Will you give it to me

Will you take the pain

I will give to you

Again and again

And will you return it

There'll be days

When I stray

I may appear to be

Constantly out of reach

I give in to sin

Because I like to practice what I preach

I'm not trying to say

I'll have it all my way

I'm always willing to learn

When you've got something to teach

Oh, and I'll make it all worthwhile

I'll make your heart smile

Pain, will you return it

I'll say it again - pain

Pain, will you return it

I'll say it again - pain

Pain, will you return it

I'll say it again - pain

Pain, will you return it

I won't say it again

I give in

Again and again

I give in

Will you give it to me

I give in

I'll say it again

I give in

I give in

Again and again

I give in

That's how my love goes

I give in

I'll say it again

I give in
