"Dreaming Of Me" is a song from the US pressing of the 1981 album Speak & Spell by Depeche Mode. It was released as the group's debut single on 20 February 1981.

Notes

In May/June 2020, someone named Adam Spector claimed that his brother Paul had written the lyrics to 'New Life' (you can read that here). In July 2020, a former bandmate of Paul Spector, named Jeff McCall, uploaded a song titled 'Do I Know You' on YouTube, of which its verses carry the same melody as those in Depeche Mode's song 'Dreaming Of Me'. Jeff wrote the following:

"Here is a recording of my former Malicieux Garde bandmate Adam Spector, jamming with his cousin Vince Clarke. Vince is playing drums and singing whilst Adam plays the synths. This was recorded before Composition Of Sound changed their name to Depeche Mode. The Song 'Do I Know You' was written by Adam and was later performed by Malicieux Garde and became a fixture of our live set. You can watch a performance of it here."

Dave said in the 1985-10-26 issue of Melody Maker:

"This was an obvious first single. We had about 20 songs but Daniel Miller, as an outsider at the time, helped us choose one. I don't think it sounds old-fashioned - I think it's a classic pop song."

Lyrics

Dreaming Of Me

Light switch

Man switch

Film was broken only then

All the night

Fused tomorrow

Dancing with a distant friend

Filming and screening

I picture the scene

Filming and dreaming

Dreaming of me

So we left

Understanding

Clean-cut, so we're sounding fast

Talked of sad

I talked of war

I laughed and climbed the rising cast

Filming and screening

I picture the scene

Filming and dreaming

Dreaming of me

Quickly I remembered

Fused and saw a face before

Timing reason

Understanding

Like association hall

Filming and screening

I picture the scene

Filming and dreaming

Dreaming of me

Just dreaming of me

It's only me

Just me
