'Heroes' is a cover of the Davie Bowie song of the same name recorded as a tribute to the late musician by Depeche Mode. This song has significance to the beginnings and formation of Depeche Mode. Prior to changing the group name to Depeche Mode, Composition Of Sound (comprising Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher, and Vince Clarke) heard Dave Gahan singing the song at a rehearsal (1980-04-0x Rehearsal, Woodlands School, Basildon, Essex, England, UK) and were impressed with Gahan's performance, leading to his invitation to join the group.
The band would later include the song in their live set list for the Global Spirit tour, where it was first performed at New York's Highline Stages on August 3rd, 2016. The performance was recorded and filmed, but is yet to be released officially.
Notes
Dave Gahan told Classic Pop magazine in March 2017: "When we started rehearsing I brought up the idea of maybe doing a Bowie cover especially after losing him. Martin and I are both huge fans, and still are. So it just seemed right, Martin was into it. It's got a real early Depeche flavour to it."
Full track sample
An excellent in-ear monitor recording of "Heroes" from 2017-06-25 Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy was uploaded to YouTube. The best available audio (M4A 128kbps) was captured from the video and is mirrored here for your listening enjoyment and in case that video is deleted in the future.
Lyrics
Heroes[1]
I, I will be king
And you, you will be my queen
Though nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
We can be heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day
I, I wish I could swim
Like the dolphins, like the dolphins can swim
Though nothing, will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, forever and ever
What d'you say?
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing can keep us together
We can beat them, forever and ever
We can be heroes, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (all around us)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, it fell on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
We could be heroes, just for one day
What d'you say?
We can be heroes
Just for one day
We can be heroes
Though nothing will keep us together
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
We can be heroes
Just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
We can be heroes
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
Just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
Just for one day
